Mountain2Coast Challenge

Mountain2Coast is a one of its kind, epic, five-day adventure where the Grade 7 children hike, bike and paddle their way from Grootvadersbos to Infanta in order to celebrate their incredible learning journey at Applewood. It is a right of passage that allows them to finish their final year in the Prep School.

Applewood offers swimming, mountain biking and trail running to capitalise on the spectacular environment we live in . We also offer traditional sports like soccer, hockey, netball, tennis and softball. In preparation for rugby at high school we also offer tag rugby, while private coaches offer rugby skills to those who are interested.

The Grade 3 camp at Cherry Glamping was an unforgettable adventure. The children pitched their own tents, explored on a scavenger hunt, swam, and took on a rowing challenge in the kayaks. They enjoyed team-building games and the patient art of making stokbrood over the fire. A wonderful display of teamwork and camaraderie.

Our fantastic Grade 1 outing to Wonderdal was truly a highlight of the year! The kids had the best time exploring, playing, and discovering new things in such an exciting environment. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and their excellent behaviour made the day even more enjoyable for everyone involved. They represented Applewood with pride, curiosity, and kindness — we couldn’t be more proud of our wonderful Grade 1s!

Last week the Grade 1 to 7 classes presented their drama productions. What a wonderful opportunity to develop and showcase stage skills like voice projection and confidence. Amazing progression was seen through the grades. Huge round of applause to the Helen O' Grady academy for all their effort.

What a fantastic day it was at the beautiful Arabella Country Estate! The Applewood golf day was a great success, filled with friendly competition, laughter, and perfect weather for a round on the greens.
The golfers had an incredible time showcasing their skills and enjoying the stunning course. The event concluded with an exciting prize giving and auction, rounding off a memorable day.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored, and contributed to making the event such a success. We’re already looking forward to our next golf day.

Our amazing Grade 1 group had a fantastic time on their Eco Walk at Glen Fruin Farm! The kids did incredibly well and didn’t complain once as they explored the great outdoors. They loved discovering nature’s beauty, learning about the environment, and enjoying the fresh air together. It was a wonderful day filled with curiosity, teamwork, and appreciation for the world around us.

Our amazing pre-primary kids looked absolutely adorable dressed up as animals! From roaring lions to fluttering butterflies, the little ones brought the jungle, farm, and forest to life with their creative costumes and big smiles. They looked so sweet and proud, filling the day with laughter, excitement, and endless cuteness! 🐾🦁🦋🐰

Congratulations to Zac Davies for an outstanding performance at the Inter-Provincial Primary Schools Cycling SA Finals held at Merensky Landbou Akademie in Tzaneen, Limpopo. Zac proudly represented the Western Cape, earning a bronze medal on day one in the schools race and another bronze on day two in the interprovincial event. We are so proud of you, Zac!

Our Grade 7 class recently completed their long awaited Mountain 2 Coast experience. A 5 night trip covering 100km without stepping into a vehicle. Grit was tested not only physically, but personally too as each night a different camp is set up, dishes need to be washed and showers are unheard of. Well done to this year's group who shared a lot of spunk, laughter and determination.

Applewood celebrated Heritage Day and Book Week with colour, creativity, and pride! From traditional dress to beloved book characters, our children showcased their heritage and imagination in style.

The Pre-Primary children joyfully celebrated International Dot Day—a global event that inspires creativity, courage, and self-expression. Each class took part in fun and imaginative activities inspired by The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds, a story that reminds us to “make our mark” and see where it takes us!

From colorful crafts to hands-on art projects, our students expressed their creativity in unique and meaningful ways.

Dot Day is more than just making dots—it’s about celebrating the creativity and potential in every child.

The cultural evening at Elgin Railway Market was a huge success, filled with energy, laughter, and community spirit. Grades 1–7 shone brightly at with wonderful class and individual performances. The kids put on an incredible performance, showcasing their talents with confidence and joy, leaving the audience both proud and inspired. The atmosphere buzzed with a positive vibe as families, friends, and visitors came together to celebrate culture, creativity, and togetherness. It was truly a night to remember, highlighting the magic that happens when community and culture unite. And the night was beautifully concluded by the outstanding senior phase choir.

Our pre-primary kids had an absolute blast at their fun multi-sport day! 🏃🚴
They gave it their all with big smiles and even bigger hearts. Each child worked so hard, showing off their amazing energy, determination, and enthusiasm. It was wonderful to see how much they have grown. The best part? They were all so happy and proud of themselves – and we couldn’t be prouder of them too! 💪🎉 🌟

The pre-primary concert was an absolute delight, centered around the vibrant and exciting theme of the circus. The little performers lit up the stage with their energy and enthusiasm, capturing the hearts of everyone in the audience. Dressed as clowns, lions, strongmen, ringmasters, and a variety of other circus characters, the children brought the big top to life with colourful costumes, joyful music, and charming dance routines. It was a magical evening, filled with laughter, applause, and pride, leaving everyone with big smiles and warm memories.

Children from Grade R to Grade 7 at Applewood shone brightly at the recent Helderberg Eisteddfod, showcasing their incredible talent, hard work, and courage. For some, performing came naturally, while others bravely stepped out of their comfort zones to take the stage.
Each participant brought something special, making the school community immensely proud. Applewood celebrates every student who took part, not just for their achievements, but for their willingness to grow, express themselves, and represent the school with such enthusiasm and heart.

Every year, Applewood celebrates Arbor Day with a special event that brings the whole school together, and this year was no exception. The Grade 7 students proudly took part in planting new trees, each one contributing to the growth and beauty of our environment. After the planting, the entire school gathered for a lovely picnic on the lawn. The weather was perfect—sunny skies and a gentle breeze made it an ideal day to relax, share food, and enjoy the outdoors. It was a memorable celebration that highlighted both community spirit and care for nature.

Our senior phase students recently hosted a highly successful market day that showcased their incredible creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. From homemade crafts and delicious treats to fun games and innovative products, each stall reflected the hard work and imagination of the learners.
The Grade 7s incorporated their EMS curriculum into their planning and presentations.
The school grounds buzzed with excitement as students, teachers, and parents enjoyed a day filled with vibrant energy, laughter, and community spirit. It was truly heartwarming to see the learners take pride in their efforts, work together as teams, and celebrate the joy of learning in such a fun and engaging way.

Our Grade 4's had a wonderful outing to the Franschhoek Motor Museum! The visit was both fun and educational, linking perfectly with our History chapter on the history of transport. It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and memorable moments.

What a magical celebration of words, rhythm, and creativity! From our tiniest Pre-Primary poets with their sound effects and sweet actions, to Grade 1’s amazing animals, Grade 2’s friendship circle, Grade 3’s fun facts, and Grade 4’s hilarious homework excuses — every grade brought their A-game! Grade 5 wowed us with variety, Grade 6 gave us goosebumps with *The Highwayman*, and Grade 7 blew us away with their original poetry slam and Bokke pride. And of course, the Afrikaans department brought tons of talent and entertainment! A day to remember — well done to all our incredible performers! 🎤✨

Flying through the air on a spaceship!!
The Grade 2 children experienced an exhilarating 3D ride through space whilst watching "My Perfect Little Planet" at the Planetarium.
After the show, the children zigzagged their way to every exciting exhibit from dinosaurs to arctic exploration at the Iziko Museum. Learning from each other and from observing the wonders of our beautiful planet, Earth.

The Grade 1 class had an utterly unforgettable outing at the aquarium, where wide-eyed wonder lit up every face. The moment the children stepped into the world behind glass, they were captivated by dazzling schools of fish that darted and shimmered in rainbow hues. With hearts full of excitement, the class left feeling inspired, their imaginations swimming with new stories to tell and dreams of underwater worlds to explore again someday.

Perfect weather for learning! Our Grade 5s took advantage of the cloudy skies to identify and describe different cloud types, bringing their science lesson to life.

We officially opened the new Applewood Multi-purpose Sports Field with a joyful ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking an exciting milestone for our school. The children eagerly tested out the new space, enjoying games of netball, hockey, and soccer. Laughter and cheers filled the air, and the fun continued with delicious boerewors rolls for all. We ended the day on a high note with a lively and entertaining netball match between the parents, teachers, and our spirited Grade 7s — a perfect celebration of community and sport.
